Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry

Over 35 million Americans experience at least some level of anxiety while visiting the dentist. It is important to routinely visit the dentist despite these fears. Our staff will go to great lengths to minimize your pain and maximize your comfort during your visits. Our team of specialists and anesthesiologists is extremely well trained in making you feel comfortable during your treatment.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a modern approach with the use of sedatives to help patients feel less anxious about dental procedures. With sedation dentistry, painful procedures such as full mouth reconstructions are made possible and painless.

IV Sedation in Dentistry

While less than 1% of Californian dentists are licensed to perform IV sedation, our office has an impeccable two-decade record of this service. This procedure involves the intravenous injection of a sedative that makes the patient drowsy to provide analgesia (pain relief) during various procedures and surgeries. Once the sedation wears off and the procedure is completed, the patient will awake with no negative recollection of the treatment. This type of sedation provides the ultimate comfort that pill or gas sedation cannot provide.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation in Dentistry

With this sedation technique, the patient breathes in a mixture of nitrous oxide (N2O) and oxygen through a nasal mask. Extremely popular and effective for less painful or severe procedures, the “laughing gas” creates a euphoric effect and causes the patient to quickly relax.  It then provides analgesia throughout the procedure.

Oral Sedation in Dentistry

Our office offers another sedation method, oral sedation, which is most easily administered. The patient takes a sedative pill the night before the procedure and/or several hours before the procedure. Once the procedure begins, the patient is calm throughout the procedure. The patient should not drive to the dental office as the sedation becomes effective before the appointment time.
